Over the past 3-5 years, the expectation has been that mobile would overtake desktop searches. In 2015, that expectation became a reality. In the same 3-5 years, the expectation was that local search would be more important than ever. Again, the expectation became a reality.

2015 was clearly a huge year in the digital world, specifically impacting online marketing, so what can we expect in 2016? The imminent expansion of existing marketing strategies.

  1. Video Marketing has been an ever evolving part of the industry, becoming more and more integrated with SEO and now, with online advertising. Video advertising has become a bigger market and will only continue to grow in 2016.
  2. Online Advertising and SEO used to be considered two standalone strategies in driving traffic and increasing revenue. Now, it’s almost impossible to have a successful marketing campaign without ads, as the two are complementary tools. Additionally, remarketing has become the wave of the future. Have you seen an item you looked up a week ago show up over and over again on other webpages or Facebook? This will become even more prevalent as ad space continues to increase, and more important for businesses to invest in.
  3. Local Marketing has always been a crucial aspect of any digital marketing campaign, but this year, your Yelp profile could be popping up on a customer’s hand or wrist! With mobile search severely outweighing desktop search, and wearable technology becoming the norm over traditional watches or pedometers, being listed on every local site possible will be a business’ saving grace if they want to be found.
  4. Customer Marketing: These tools, and the many other strategies that a business can use to market their products/services, also now come with a stronger caveat: customer service. It’s been forecasted by Kapost and others that 2016 will be the year that similar businesses now compete solely on their level of customer service for retention, as opposed to possibly having a better option for their target market’s needs.
